Ceramic Fiber Door, Part II

In yesterday's post I tried to illustrate how I made my ceramic fiber door. At the time, I was firing my new kiln and couldn't show a picture of the door that came out quite well. Here are a couple of pictures of that door from the inside and one from the outside.

  1. did you build your kiln? Or did you add extra fiber on a brick door of an existing kiln for added insulation?

  2. I built the kiln. The door is all fiber. It's folded accordian-style and held in place with metal cleats.

  3. This door looks great. It looks like you bought the pre-made folded modules. This method is alot cheaper and is just as good. You did a wonderful job. Hope you get another couple hundred firings out of your new door.

  4. Thanks. I learned quite a bit from my mistakes on the old kiln. First (and obviously) I learned that orienting it the long way -- fewer folds, and no center joint -- made a much neater appearance, in addition to a better door.

The door closes with bolts and nuts. That made it so that the seal was completely tight. For the first few years, it required quite a bit of tightening to complete the seal. Eventually, that compression around the outside became permanent. It's an utterly tight seal. Not even the hint of a flame escapes.
