All Us Potters

All our pots got a place in the fire
Some glaze low, some vitrify 'er
Some collect ash in the middle of the pyre
Some are turned, or coiled -- shaped with anything we’ve got now

Listen as you tap and the pottery rings
Pitchers, bowls, plates, and the decorative things
Used by us paupers, and treasured by our kings
And it marks our histories.

All our pots got a place in the fire
Some glaze low, some vitrify 'er
Some collect ash in the middle of the pyre
Some are turned, or coiled -- shaped with anything we’ve got now

Fired through the night time, thrown in the day,
Start out by centering then you’re on your way.
Quietly at work with not a lot to say
(Sometimes) the potter simply talks to himself

All our pots got a place in the fire
Some glaze low, some vitrify 'er
Some collect ash in the middle of the pyre
Some are turned, or coiled -- shaped with anything we’ve got now

(apologies to Bill Staines)
